Printers Remain Installed on a Terminal Server After You Disconnect from the Terminal Server (822143)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP4

SYMPTOMS

When you disconnect from a Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4)-based terminal server, some of your redirected printers remain installed on the terminal server instead of being removed as expected.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • You are connected to the terminal server from a client with 21 or more printers installed that are redirected when you log on to the terminal server.

    -or-
  • Multiple users (21 or more) with redirected printers disconnect from the terminal server at the same time or within about 2-second intervals of each other.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, manually remove the remaining redirected printers from the terminal server.

MORE INFORMATION

In either of the scenarios described in the "Cause" section, when the client next connects to the terminal server and the installed printers are redirected, duplicate printers are listed as "printername (Copy 2)" for each of the printers that were not removed. As a result, the client may experience one or more of the following behaviors:
  • If the client prints to the default printer, the print operation works as expected.
  • If the client prints to the new copy of the printer for the current session, the print operation works as expected.
  • If the client prints to the copy of the printer connection from a previous session, this generates an error message that indicates that the printer connection cannot be found.
