"This Program Does Not Run Correctly on This Version of Windows" Error Message Occurs When You Try to Install Proxy 2.0 Client (821997)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000 SP3
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Proxy 2.0 Client on a Windows 2000-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
This program does not run correctly on this version of Windows. To continue, click Run Program. To exit, click Cancel. For more information, click Details.
When you click Details, you may receive the following error message:
This program does not run correctly on this version of Windows.

Microsoft Proxy Server and Client 1.0 and 2.0 are not compatible with this version of Windows.

Contact Microsoft Corporation regarding updates that are compatible with this version of Windows.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • You upgraded your Windows 2000-based computer from any earlier version to Service Pack 3 (SP3).

    -or-
  • You upgraded to SP3 and then upgraded to Service Pack 4 (SP4).


The problem occurs because of an incorrect registry key that is added by SP3. The key is not removed by the upgrade to SP4.

This problem does not occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • You install Proxy Client on an integrated installation of Windows 2000 SP4.
  • You install Proxy Client on a Windows 2000-based computer that was upgraded to SP4 from an original released version of Windows 2000, from SP1, or from SP2.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you can safely ignore these error messages. Click Run Program to continue the installation. Setup will successfully complete the installation, and Proxy 2.0 Client will work as expected.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
