SUMMARY

With Microsoft Office v. X for Mac programs, you can edit and view documents in many languages, if the appropriate Apple Language Update is installed. The languages are listed in the "More Information" section of this article.

You can turn on additional functionality in the specific Office program if that Office program is registered to the specific language in the Microsoft Language Register utility.
Note Language-specific features are also available if you use the specific language version of Mac OS X.
Note The ability to use the Japanese language is only available in the English (U.S.) and Japanese versions of Office.

Office v. X Multilingual Features

Office v. X programs support editing and viewing of documents in many languages. If you work with documents that contain text in more than one language, if you work in a multinational organization, or if you share documents with people who use Office on computers that run in other languages, you or your system administrator can customize Office v. X to manage conventions and requirements unique to each language.

Here are several ways that you can use multilingual features:

Correct date, time, and number style: When you enter dates, times, and numbers, the Office programs can format them in the correct style for different languages.
Japanese characters: When you use the Microsoft Language Register utility, you can type Japanese characters in a Microsoft Word document or Microsoft Entourage e-mail message on an English-language system. In Word, you can then use word-breaking and text formatting conventions specific to Asian text.
Mixed character support: Data that includes both European-language characters and Asian-language characters can be displayed in Office documents.
Multilingual sorting rules: You can sort data in tables and lists according to the rules of any supported language.
Web pages: When you create Web pages and intranet content by using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or Microsoft PowerPoint, you can set the default character set encoding so that pages display correctly in Web browsers all over the world.

Edit Japanese Text in Office Programs

To enable editing of Japanese text in Office programs, follow these steps:

Install the Microsoft Language Register by using the Value Pack installer on your Microsoft Office v. X CD. For more information about installing Value Pack components, see the Guide to the Value Pack in the Value Pack folder on your CD.
Drag the program icon for the program that you want to enable Japanese text editing for on top of the Microsoft Language Register utility.
On the Select the language to enable for shortcut menu, click Japanese.

Note After you run the Microsoft Language Register program, it is a good idea to select the Kotoeri keyboard layout, or a third-party keyboard layout of your choice, on the Keyboard Menu tab in the International pane in System Preferences.
