Smart Display Setup Is Incompatible with Wi-Fi Protected Access Update (821486)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Powered Smart Display

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) Protected Access (WPA) update on a Microsoft Windows XP Professional-based computer, and then you run the Smart Display Setup program, you may experience a failure when you try to configure an 802.11b network adapter. You may receive the following error message:
WZCTool has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Then the Smart Display Setup Wizard will fail with the following error message:
Setup Wizard Not Successful.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the method that Smart Display Setup uses to access and configure wireless networking equipment is no longer accessible after the WPA update is installed. This problem only occurs when you are trying to use a Universal Serial Bus (USB) or peripheral component interconnect (PCI) 802.11b wireless network adapter that is attached to or installed in the computer. If you use a wireless access point with Smart Display, you can still use Smart Display Setup.

WORKAROUND

Remove the WPA Update, Run the Smart Display Setup Wizard, and then Reinstall the WPA Update

  1. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q815485, and then click Remove.
  3. You may receive an error message that states that some programs on the computer may not work correctly if the update is removed.

You may ignore this error message, and then click Yes to remove the update.
  4. Restart your computer and rerun the Smart Display Setup Wizard.
  5. Download the Wireless Protected Access update.

    6. Click OK.
  3. Configure the ad-hoc network on the Smart Display device.
    1. If the Welcome screen is still visible on the Smart Display device, tap Advanced with the stylus and calibrate the screen.

Otherwise, continue to the next step.
    2. Tap Settings, tap Wireless Networks, and then tap Add.
