Office Setup does not complete because the BackWeb agent is running (821406)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install one or more of the programs that are listed at the beginning of this article, the installation does not complete. You receive a message that states that the program BackWeb is running in the background, and must be shut down before you complete your installation.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you have the BackWeb Engine installed on your computer. This program may be configured to start automatically. It runs in the background and may interfere with the installation of the programs that are listed at the beginning of this article.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, prevent the BackWeb agent from starting by using the System Configuration Utility, and then install Office. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  4. Click OK to close the System Configuration Utility, and then restart your computer.
  5. Install Office (or the office program that you were trying to install).
  6. Repeat steps 1 through 3, but click to select the Load Startup Items check box this time.
  7. Click OK to close the System Configuration Utility, and then restart your computer.
