SYMPTOMS
When you use the Sysprep tool with the DesktopCleanUp entry in
Winbom.ini to preinstall Windows XP, desktop icons are removed when a user
first logs on, and the default Windows icons are placed on the desktop. Some of the icons that are removed include:
- Internet Explorer
- MSN Messenger
- Windows Media Player
If the Windows Media Player icon is deleted before you use Sysprep with the DesktopCleanUp entry in
Winbom.ini to preinstall Windows XP, the Windows Media Player icon is
restored after Sysprep runs.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, obtain Windows XP SP1. In Windows XP SP1,
desktop icons are removed when a user first logs on. Default Windows icons
are placed on the desktop unless you set DoDesktopCleanup in the [Shell]
section of the Winbom.ini file.
Explanation of the DoDesktopCleanup Entry in Winbom.ini
The DoDesktopCleanup entry moves items on the Windows desktop to a
folder that is located in the
SystemDrive\Program Files folder.
Syntax DoDesktopCleanup
= Yes | No
Value: Yes
This moves shortcuts that are installed in the desktop folder (for example, the C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Desktop folder) to a folder that is in the SystemDrive\Program Files folder, as specified by the DesktopShortcutsFolderName entry in the [DesktopShortcutsFolder] section of the Winbom.ini file.
Value: No
With this setting, the Windows desktop is not modified before the end-user first-run experience.
Default Value: No change to existing setting.
Example:
DoDesktopCleanup = No
Note The Recycle Bin is not affected by DoDesktopCleanup.
If
DoDesktopCleanup = Yes, the Desktop Cleanup Wizard runs for the first time
60 days after the end-user first-run experience.
If DoDesktopCleanup =
No, the Desktop Cleanup Wizard runs for the first time 14 days after the
end-user first-run experience
