"The wizard was unsuccessful" error message when you create an Application Center 2000 cluster (820455)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Application Center 2000 SP2

SYMPTOMS

When you use the New Cluster Wizard in Application Center 2000 to create a cluster, and you select an option that enables either Network Load Balancing (NLB) or other load balancing, you receive the following error message when the wizard has completed:
The Wizard was Unsuccessful
The cluster operation returned a failure.
0x80004005
unspecified error (0x80004005)
Click back to review your setting and then retry.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if NLB has been removed or if NLB is not installed on the computer.
To resolve this problem, install NLB before you create an Application Center 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) cluster. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Explore.
  2. Right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
  3. Right-click one of the local area connections, and then click Properties.
  4. On the General tab, click Install, click Service, and then click Add. Select Network Load Balancing, and then click OK.
Note If you do not want to install NLB, you can create an Application Center 2000 SP2 cluster that has a load balancing type of "None". This will also prevent the replication of IIS Server bindings. These include IP addresses, ports, and host headers.

MORE INFORMATION

The Application Center 2000 SP2 cluster creation wizard will show that you can create an NLB cluster even if NLB has been removed from your system.
