The Notes Record Function Can Use All the System Memory (820161)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Powered Pocket PC 2003

SYMPTOMS

A Pocket PC 2003 device may continue to record until all the memory is exhausted on the device. If you fail to acknowledge the warning message that the system is low on memory, the recording will not stop until all the memory is exhausted. A subsequent warning message may be displayed that directs you to delete the large file to recover memory. Once this occurs, the recorded file may not be viewable with File Explorer on the device.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because of a design change between Pocket PC 2002 and Pocket PC 2003.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, stop recording before the memory is exhausted. For example, if you know that a 10-minute long recording uses approximately 5 megabytes (MB) of memory, keep your notes limited to under 10 minutes.

To delete the unviewable file to free up memory on the device, follow these steps with ActiveSync Explore:
  1. Synchronize the Pocket PC device.
  2. While the device is still connected to the PC, click Explore on the ActiveSync dialog box.

Note Response from the device may be slow because of decreased memory availability.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  4. On the View tab, click to select the Show hidden files and folders check box, and then click OK.
  5. Notice that the previously hidden Notes file appears in Windows Explorer.
  6. Click the Notes file, and then click Delete on the File menu.
