SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server to Exchange 2003, you may receive the following error message:
A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file: C:\Ex2003RC0\Setup\I386\Exchange\Bin\63e700.msi
Additionally, the following data is logged in the Exchange Server Setup Log.log file:

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Msxml3.msi XML3 parser package was installed by BindView bv-Control for Microsoft Exchange before you installed Exchange 2003.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\544ADF5B4CAC6AB48ABF7A12B24D93ED\SourceList

  3. Double-click the Packagename registry value.
  4. In the Value data box, type msxml3.msi, and then click OK.
  5. Quit Registry Editor.
  6. Restart the installation of Exchange 2003.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
