Buttons and Boxes on the Works for Windows Tool Bar Overlap (82881)

SUMMARY

The buttons and boxes on the Microsoft Works for Windows tool bar may overlap and hide one another. For example, the Font Size box may cover the Bold button. This problem can be caused by any of the following conditions:

The window border width is set too large for the current Windows display resolution.
The FILES= line in CONFIG.SYS is set too low.
The Helvetica font line in WIN.INI is incorrect.

Window Border Width

To set the window border width, run Control Panel, choose the Desktop icon, and change the Border Width setting in the Sizing grid box.

To set the display resolution, choose the Windows Setup icon (usually found in the Main group), and use the following chart to determine the largest border width setting that can be used before the Bold button will be obscured:

FILES= line

The same symptoms may occur if the FILES= line in the CONFIG.SYS file is set too low. However, if this setting is the cause, characters in dialog boxes will be unreadable in addition to the overlap problems on the tool bar.

Helvetica Fonts Line in WIN.INI

Check the Helvetica font line of the [fonts] section in the WIN.INI file to verify that it corresponds to the video driver that you are using. For example, if you are using the standard VGA driver but your Helvetica font section reads HELVF.FON instead of HELVE.FON, the Helvetica fonts being used will appear larger than they should, thus allowing less room on the tool bar.

The Helvetica font line should correspond with the following:

HELVx.FON > where "x" is A through F

A = CGA B = EGA/Hercules C = 60 dpi resolution printers D = 120 dpi resolution printers E = VGA F = 8514/A

For the standard VGA driver, the correct Helvetica font line is the following:

Helv 8,10,12,14,18,24 (VGA res)=HELVE.FON
