Audio Program Stops Responding After You Disconnect a USB Multimedia Device While You Are Using the Device (818801)

SYMPTOMS

If you disconnect a USB audio device, for example a Bluetooth headset, from your Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer while you are using the USB device to listen to an audio stream, the program that you use to play the audio stream may stop responding, and you may not be able to shut down your computer.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the USB audio device that you disconnect is based on Portcls.sys. Portcls.sys is an audio port-class driver for port/miniport devices. If you disconnect a USB device from your computer while you are using the USB device to listen to an audio stream, Portcls.sys does not correctly handle the IRP_MJ_CLOSE request that occurs after the IRP_MN_SURPRISE_REMOVAL request is generated. Because of this behavior, Portcls.sys cannot close the audio stream and complete the handle cleanup. Also, an IRP_MN_REMOVE_DEVICE request is not generated because open handles remain. When this problem occurs, the program that you use to play the audio stream may stop responding, and you may not be able to shut down your computer.
