BUG: "Unable to Install Java Packages" Error Message When You Install Visual Studio 6.0 on a Computer Running Windows 2000 SP4 (818421)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Visual Studio 6.0 on a computer running Windows 2000 SP4, you may receive the following error message:
Java Package Manager - Unable to install Java Packages from %WINDIR%\Java\classes\xmldso.cab. Access is denied

WORKAROUND

If you do not want to install Visual J++ 6.0 on the computer, you can work around this problem by ignoring the error message. This problem does not affect Microsoft Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual C++, Visual FoxPro, Visual SourceSafe, or Visual InterDev.

RESOLUTION

If you want to install Visual J++ 6.0 on the computer, follow these steps:
  1. Install the Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM) from the Visual J++ 6.0 CD-ROM installation media. To do this, run Msjavx86.exe. This executable file is located in the IE4 folder on the CD-ROM.
  2. Use Windows Update to upgrade to the latest version of the Microsoft VM. To do this, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Update.
  3. Install Visual J++ 6.0 from the Visual J++ 6.0 CD-ROM installation media.
