PRB: Upgrading to Media Player 9 Series May Cause DRM Playback to Stop Responding in Third-Party Applications (817977)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series SDK

Notice

The third-party products that are discussed in this article are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding the performance or reliability of these products.

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows Media Player 9 Series, certain third-party applications cannot play DRM (Windows Media Rights Management) content that was created with the Enable Copy Protection option selected in earlier versions of the Windows Media Player.

Media Player 9 Series still plays this content.

RESOLUTION

In some cases, the problem is caused by the way the third-party applications link in the Windows Media libraries. Microsoft recommends that you contact the third party to determine whether they have an updated version of the application that correctly references these libraries.

MORE INFORMATION

Applications that are built by using the DirectX Software Development Kit (SDK) to render media files have to make special considerations when playing Windows Media content, and specifically DRM content.

STATUS

Microsoft is investigating the cause of the problem. Third parties should recompile their applications linking in the appropriate Windows Media Libraries. This behavior is by design.
