Hotmail messages appear to be sent without Hotmail credentials through Outlook 2003 (817879)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003

SYMPTOMS

In Outlook 2003, your Sent Messages folder in your Hotmail account may contain messages that you did not send, although no one else knows your Hotmail credentials.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if both the following conditions are true:
  • Another user has had access to your computer and user profile, with or without your permission.
  • Your Hotmail account has been added to your Outlook e-mail accounts.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, move your Personal Folder Store (PST) to a hard disk that uses an Encrypting File System (EFS), and do not let anyone else use your computer.

MORE INFORMATION

The other user does not have to know your Hotmail password. E-mail messages to be sent through your Hotmail account can be created and queued without providing the password. The next time you send and receive e-mail and provide Outlook with your Hotmail credentials, the queued messages are sent.
