System information reports incorrect number of processors when you run an IBM eServer x440 in a 16-way configuration (817812)

SYMPTOMS

When you view the processor information under System Information on a system with hyperthreading-enabled processors, the distribution of physical and logical processors may be reported incorrectly.

For example, on an IBM eServer x440 system with 16 processors, the number of processors is reported as 4 physical processors with 8 logical processors each. The correct configuration for this system is 16 physical processors with 2 logical processors each.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when you run the IBM eServer x440 system in a 16-way configuration.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
