"This Page Provides Potentially Unsafe Information to an ActiveX Control" Error Message When You Click Back or Forward in Internet Explorer (817421)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP3, when used with:

SYMPTOMS

In Internet Explorer, when you click Back or Forward to visit a Web site, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
This page provides potentially unsafe information to an ActiveX control. You current security settings prohibit running controls in this matter. As a result, this page may not display correctly.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true, in the order that they are presented:
  1. You apply the security update that is provided in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article or a later update:

    810847 MS03-004: February, 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer

  2. You visit a Web site that has an IFrame and that is in your Internet zone.
  3. You visit another Web site that is in your Internet zone.
  4. You click Back or Forward to revisit the Web site that is listed in step 2.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
