FIX: EstimatedRows Property of Aggregation is Set to Zero for Aggregations That Have Several Dimension Members Cubes with Many Leaf Dimension Members (817297)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services SP1
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services SP2
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services SP3

BUG #: 13954 (Plato7x)

SYMPTOMS

Analysis Services may set the EstimatedRows property for a particular aggregation in a partition to zero, if the number of dimension members in a cube is large. The EstimatedRows property is used by the Aggregation Design Wizard when it evaluates aggregations for use in the cube. Because the EstimatedRows size is zero for these aggregations, they may be selected for use in the cube even though the size of the aggregation is quite large and other aggregations may be more appropriate.

MORE INFORMATION

Analysis Services uses a formula to estimate the number of rows that will be required for an aggregation at selected levels of the dimensions in a cube. The estimate is stored in the EstimatedRows property of the Aggregation object in Microsoft Decision Support Objects (DSO). One step in the formula uses the product of the dimension member counts, at the selected level of each dimension, as the denominator in a division operation. In cases where there are many members at the selected levels of the dimensions, the result of the division operation is rounded to zero. As a result, the formula for the EstimatedRows property returns zero. With this fix, the EstimatedRows property for such aggregations is set to the value of the fact table size for the cube or partition. This prevents the aggregation from incorrectly being selected for use.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
