You cannot create a new column by pressing the tab key in OneNote 2003 (817108)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office OneNote 2003
  • Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, Service Pack 1 (SP1)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a Horizontal Outline in Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, after your text wraps to a new line, if you press TAB instead of creating a new column, nothing happens.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the first heading is permitted to wrap in the OneNote section. If the first heading wraps, you designate that the first heading will be as wide as the whole Horizontal Outline. Because of this, you cannot insert a new column inside that heading.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, start a new column. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. With the insertion point at the end of the text of the first heading press ENTER.
  2. Type some text to the width that you want the first column.
  3. Press TAB.

    This inserts the new column.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each additional column that you want to create.
You can now return to the first column that you created and complete typing your text.

Note Do not press ENTER when you are finished typing your text. Pressing ENTER rearranges your column layout, undoing some of your columns.

If you want to create a new column layout under your existing layout, for example: from three columns to two columns, follow these steps:
  1. Put the insertion point at the end of the last line of the last column.
  2. If the last column is shorter than the other columns in the layout, press Enter as many times as you want to bring the insertion point below the last line of the tallest column.
  3. Press ENTER.
  4. Press SHIFT+TAB as many times as you want to promote the new line to a top level heading.
You can now create a new column layout with different widths than the previous columns.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
