You cannot preview a Web presentation in PowerPoint 2003 (817103)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to preview a Web presentation in PowerPoint 2003, you may receive one or both of the following messages:

Content in this Web site is being blocked by Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration.

This message has the option to close the message and the option to add the Web site to your Trusted Sites zone in Microsoft Internet Explorer.

-or-

This presentation contains content that your browser may not be able to show properly. This presentation was optimized for more recent versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer. If you would like to proceed anyway, click here.

When you click the here hyperlink in the message, Internet Explorer loads the frameset for the Web presentation, but does not populate it with any text or slides.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if any of the following conditions are true:
  • You preview the Web presentation on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration option enabled.

    In this case, you receive both of the messages that are referenced in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
  • You preview the Web presentation and the Internet Explorer security setting is set to High for Local Intranets.

    In this case, you only receive the second message that is referenced in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps to publish your Web presentation to either a Web site or a public share.

Note You cannot use the preview function if you have configured your Internet Explorer for heighten security either manually or through Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration.
  1. On the File menu, click Save as Web Page.
  2. Click Publish.
  3. Click Browse, and then either select your Web site location or select a shared network folder.
  4. Click Open.
  5. Make any changes to the Web settings that you want, and then click Publish.
If you want to preview the Web page after it is saved, locate the .mht file in the share or Web site where you published it, and then open the Web page with Internet Explorer.

At this point, you receive the message that prompts you to close the message or to add your Web page preview temporary file to the Trusted Sites zone. Select the option to add the file to the Trusted Sites zone when you receive this message.

Note The security level for the Trusted Sites zone must be set to Medium or lower to run the scripts in the Web presentation.

If you have your security settings set to High for Local Intranets, you must add the Web site or public share manually to the Internet Explorer Trusted Sites. To do this:
  1. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites zone.
  3. Click Sites.
  4. In the Add this Web site to the zone dialog box, do one of the following:
    • Type the Internet address for the Web site. If your Web site supports secure access, enter the address as "https://Web_server_address" (without quotation marks).
    • Type the local share address using the following format:

      MHTML:File://\\Server_name

    • Click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.
    • Click Add after you have entered the local share address.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
