SYMPTOMS

When you edit a picture in Microsoft Image Library and try to crop the image by using the Aspect Ratio crop, the resulting image may be two pixels smaller all around than you expect.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the original size of the image has an even number of pixels for height, width or both height and width. When you use the Aspect Ratio crop, Image Library tries to find the center pixel of the image to center the crop on. Because of this, if the image has an even number of pixels for height, width or for both dimensions, Image Library rounds down the results from the calculation to find the center pixel. This process results in a crop region that is two pixels smaller for each dimension with an even number of pixels.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem:
  1. After you have chosen the aspect ratio you want your image cropped to, set the aspect ratio to none. This setting retains the settings you make to the Crop Handles.
  2. Depending on whether one or both dimensions are made up of an even number of pixels, you must reduce the number of pixels that are cropped by one for either the Right and Left handles or the Top and Bottom handles or for all four Crop Handles.
  3. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
