You are prompted to save changes when you close a Word 2002 document even though you have made no changes (816473)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Word 2002 document and then close it immediately, you may receive the following error message:
Do you want to save the changes to Document_Name?
This behavior may occur even though you have made no changes to the document.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you have Smart Tags turned on. Word automatically scans your document and tags various text items according to your Smart Tags settings, and therefore modifies your document.

WORKAROUND

To disable the automatic text tagging by Smart Tags, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word.
  2. With a blank document open, click AutoCorrect Options on the Tools menu.
  3. On the Smart Tags tab, click to clear the Label text with smart tags check box.
  4. Click OK.
