The Firewall Client Does Not Support the ConnectEx and WSARecvMsg APIs (815051)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000
  • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 SP1

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Firewall client on either Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, some Winsock applications may not work through ISA Server 2000. For example, Remote Procedure Call (RPC) applications that are using Winsock may not connect through ISA Server 2000. You do not see this issue with Microsoft Windows 2000 or earlier versions of Microsoft Windows when you are running the Firewall client.

CAUSE

Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 introduce new Winsock APIs to extend the capability of Winsock. Because ISA Server 2000 was released before these operating systems became available, the Firewall client does not support these new Winsock calls. The Winsock APIs in question are ConnectEx and WSARecvMsg.

RESOLUTION

Note You must install ISA Server Service Pack 1 (SP1) before you install the following hotfix. For additional information about how to obtain the latest ISA Server service pack, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
Date Time Version Size File name
   ----------------------------------------------------
   20-Apr-2003 14:12 3.0.1200.265 97,552 Wspwsp.dll

This fix also applies to the French, German, Spanish, and Japanese versions of ISA Server. To install the fix, run the self-extracting file. You do not have to restart the ISA Server computer. If the computer is part of an ISA Server array, you do not have to shut down the whole array. You can still install this fix on a one-by-one basis.

Note Apply this hotfix on the ISA Server computer. This updates the Firewall client share on the ISA Server computer. To deploy the hotfix to the Firewall clients, rerun the Firewall client setup and select Repair. Note that you must use the Firewall client share (for example, \\isaserver\mspclnt\setup.exe) to do this. If you run the setup program from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, the Firewall client will not be updated with the new hotfix.

Alternatively, you can remove and then reinstall the Firewall client to obtain the updated version of Wspwsp.dll from the Firewall client share.

The Firewall client is updated with the hotfix automatically if the Firewall client is installed after the hotfix has been applied to the ISA Server computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
