Internet Explorer Unexpectedly Quits After You Click Web Site Links (815015)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.2.x for Macintosh, when used with:
    • the operating system: Mac OS X

SYMPTOMS

When you are viewing a Web site and you have clicked several hyperlinks on that Web site, you may receive the following error message:
The application Internet Explorer has unexpectedly quit.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions exist:
  • The page contains an embedded frame or iframe page.
  • The embedded frame or iframe contains a control.
  • The control has entered into an idle state.
  • The embedded frame or iframe also contains a hidden frame or iframe page.
When you view a new page, Internet Explorer deletes the original pages, starting with pages in frames or iframes. However, it does not delete hidden pages or frames, and it does not delete the page the control is part of because the control is in an idle state. The control then returns from its idle state, so Internet Explorer can delete the page that the control is part of. Internet Explorer now encounters the hidden frame or iframe. Internet Explorer deletes the hidden frame, but if that frame has a reference back to the page that was already deleted, Internet Explorer tries to delete the already-deleted page.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
