File Transfer from Digital Camera Fails (814390)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to transfer a large number of files or a single large file from a Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) device, such as a Sony MemoryStick, you may receive one of the following error messages:
The computer cannot detect the camera or scanner. Please make sure the device is turned on and is properly connected to the computer.
The current picture cannot be copied. To copy this picture, click "Try again." To stop copying, click "Cancel."
If you do click Try again, the error message returns.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the PTP driver supplied by Microsoft has the following limitations:
  • File transfers are limited to 2048 files at one time.
  • Files must be less than 210 megabytes (MB).

RESOLUTION

When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
