Invalid Path or File Name Error Message When You Save Online Broadcast Files (813722)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you create either a live Microsoft PowerPoint Online Broadcast or a recorded Microsoft PowerPoint Online Broadcast, and you try to specify a Web location (Hypertext Transfer Protocol [HTTP] or File Transfer Protocol [FTP]) for the Save broadcast files in setting in the Broadcast Settings dialog box, you may receive one of the following error messages:
The path or file name for http://servername/sharename is invalid. Please check that the path and file name are correct.
-or-
http://servername/sharename is not a shared directory. A shared directory should be in the form of \\servername\sharename.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because PowerPoint 2003 cannot save online broadcast files to an FTP location or an HTTP location. However, you can save the online broadcast files locally or to a file server on the network.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, specify a shared folder as the target location where to save the broadcast file by using the Universal Naming Convention (UNC), or \\servername\sharename.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
