You receive an error message, or you cannot view thumbnails when you insert an online clip into PowerPoint or Word (813719)

SYMPTOMS

When you use any one of the products that are listed in the "Applies to" section to try to insert an online clip into a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation or a Microsoft Word document, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • You cannot view a thumbnail of the clip.
  • A generic Microsoft Windows icon, or another program icon, is displayed in the thumbnail instead of a preview image of the clip.
  • You receive an error message that is similar to one of the following error messages:
    Microsoft PowerPoint has encountered an error and needs to close
    PowerPoint couldn't create a picture from the specified file.
    Not a valid embedded object
    Word cannot obtain the data for C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\Filename

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Temporary Internet Files folder is very large or if the folder has only Read and Execute permissions.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, delete the temporary Internet files that are on your computer. Then, make sure that the Temporary Internet Files folder has Read and Write permissions.

The location of the Temporary Internet Files folder is as follows:

userprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet files

To delete the temporary Internet files, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the General tab.
  4. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
  5. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK.
  6. Click OK.

To use the Disk Cleanup tool, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
