Error Message in Mfc42.dll Appears When Starting, and then Internet Explorer Quits (813181)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft Internet Explorer, one of the following error messages may appear and Internet Explorer quits:
  • Microsoft Windows XP
    Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    To see the data that the error report contains, click click here in the error message box. You then see error signature information that may be similar to:
       AppName        AppVer        ModName        ModVer        Offset
       -----------------------------------------------------------------------
       Iexplore.exe   6.0.2600.0    Mfc42.dll      6.0.8665.0    018f:5f45bf55
  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition and Microsoft Windows 98
    This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

    If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
    When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following information: Iexplore.exe caused an invalid page fault in Mfc42.dll at 0177:6c3cbf55.Note The actual memory address may vary.
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
    Iexplore.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

    An error log is being created.
    To view the error log in Microsoft Windows 2000, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
    2. In the Search for files or folders named box, type Drwtsn32.log.
    3. Click Search Now.
    4. Right-click the file, and then click Open.

      By default, the Drwtsn32.log file is located in the following folder:

      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\DrWatson

  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
    An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

    Mfc42.dll

    Exception: access violation (address, address:<address>)

CAUSE

This problem has been reported to occur when the Xupiter program is installed on the computer.

RESOLUTION

To remove the Xupiter program and correct this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Use the Xupiter Uninstaller Utility

Method 3: Change Internet Options

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  2. On the Advanced tab, disable third-party browser extensions.
  3. Restart the computer, start Internet Explorer, and follow Method 1 or 2.
