Word quits when you copy and paste portions of a document in Word 2002 (811930)

SYMPTOMS

When you copy and paste portions of a Word 2002 document, Word quits abruptly with the following error message:
WINWORD.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
This behavior also occurs if you use a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro to perform a similar function. Specifically, Word quits when the macro tries to read the Selection.Range.Information VBA property.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Office XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

To view the error signature after Word quits, follow these steps. Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Microsoft Word.
  2. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Word.
  3. Click System Info.
  4. Expand Office 10 Applications.
  5. Click Office Event/Application Fault.
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the log to find the date that Word quit and generated the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
