XADM: "No Such Object on the Server" Error Message When You Use the Smtpreinstall.exe Tool (811668)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

Important This article contains information about editing the metabase. Before you edit the metabase, verify that you have a backup copy that you can restore if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, see the "Configuration Backup/Restore" Help topic in Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

SYMPTOMS

After you reinstall the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service, and then run the SMTP Reinstall tool (Smtpreinstall.exe) on an Exchange 2000 computer that is installed on a cluster, you receive the following error message:
There is no such object on the server.

Facility: Win32
ID no: 80072030
Microsoft Exchange SMTP Reinstall
As a result, you cannot use the Smtpreinstall.exe tool to repair the metabase of the Exchange 2000 computer where the SMTP service was removed and reinstalled.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Smtpreinstall.exe tool is not supported on Exchange 2000 computers that are installed on a cluster.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Reinstall Exchange 2000

Remove and then reinstall Exchange 2000 and the Exchange 2000 service packs. For additional information about how to implement Exchange 2000 on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based cluster, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Method 2: Manually Repair the Metabase

You can manually repair the metabase after you reinstall the SMTP service. To repair the metabase on an Exchange 2000 computer that is installed on a cluster, follow these steps.

Important On a cluster, it is critical that you restart the node after you remove a service and before you reinstall the service. Follow these steps only after you remove the SMTP service, restart the computer, and then reinstall the SMTP service.

Warning If you edit the metabase incorrectly, you can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall any product that uses the metabase. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that result if you incorrectly edit the metabase can be solved. Edit the metabase at your own risk.

Note Always back up the metabase before you edit it.

    3. For each file in the list, type the following line at the command prompt, and then press ENTER, where FileName is the name of the file that you want to register:

      regsvr32 FileName

  2. Stop the SMTP service and the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service. To do so, type the following lines at the command prompt, and press ENTER after each line:

    net stop smtpsvc
    net stop msexchangesa

  3. Use the Adsutil utility to delete the LM/DS2MB/HighWaterMarks key in the metabase. To delete the LM/DS2MB/HighWaterMarks key, type the following lines at the command prompt, and press ENTER after each line, where drive is the drive where Windows is installed:

    cd drive:\inetpub\adminscripts
