SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Windows XP, you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP Professional CD-ROM, although the CD-ROM is already in the drive.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the registry entry that specifies the path to the location of the Windows XP installation files is incorrect.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. To resolve this issue, change the registry entry that specifies the path to the location of the installation CD-ROM:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Click the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

  4. Locate the SourcePath string value.
  5. Double-click SourcePath, and then type the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive in the Value data box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
  8. Click Retry to restart the installation process.
