DOC: Microsoft Provisioning System Installation Document Is Not Clear (811130)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Provisioning System

SUMMARY

The Microsoft Provisioning System (MPS) installation document for a single-computer installation is not clear on some points and may lead to an unsuccessful installation. To correct an unsuccessful installation, you must completely rebuild the server. This article contains important guidelines that can help you avoid an unsuccessful installation.

MORE INFORMATION

Follow these guidelines for successful installation:
  • Check the DNS client parameters before you install any of the MPS components. In a single computer installation, the DNS client must have its own IP address for the first preferred DNS server, and the second DNS server can be used for the network.

    To set DNS client parameters:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-Up Connections.
    2. Double-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
    3. On the General tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
    4. On the General tab, click Advanced.
    5. Click the DNS tab, and then set the DNS parameters.
  • Remember to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 on the computer.
  • Do NOT use a server name that contains a hyphen. A server name that contains a hyphen prevents the Delegate Access Client (DAC) from successful initialization. If the initialization is not successful, you must completely rebuild the server (starting with Microsoft Windows 2000) to resolve the problem.
  • The Microsoft Provisioning Framework (MPF) setup program assumes that you have installed Windows 2000, Microsoft SQL Server 2000, and Microsoft Exchange 2000 with the default option of installing to drive C. If you have installed to a different drive, you cannot accept the default drive locations during the MPF setup. You must change the drive locations to match the location of the Windows 2000, SQL Server 2000, and Exchange 2000 locations.
  • After you install MPF and the installation scripts, restart the computer.

Note Restart the computer before you install the DAC.
  • The DAC installation prompts you for a password. This is the same password that you set during the MPF installation. If you use a different password, the DAC will not work correctly, and you must rebuild the server, starting with Windows 2000.
