XL2000: Excel Stops Responding (Hangs) When You Try to Insert an Object (811056)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you click Object on the Insert menu to insert an object into a Microsoft Excel worksheet, Excel may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you have a large number of standard programs installed or ActiveX controls registered. When you insert an object into a worksheet, Excel enumerates the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry key to obtain the list of possible objects. When Excel tries to build the list of insertable objects to display in the Insert Object dialog box, if the list exceeds an internal limit in Excel, the program may stop responding.
