CAUSE

This issue may occur after you install the Windows Media Player 7 update 320920 on your Windows 2000-based computer. Your Outlook 2002 .pst file may become damaged when you install this update.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, open the .pst file on another computer, export the data to a new .pst file, and then import the new .pst file into Outlook 2002.

Copy the .pst File to Another Computer

To copy the .pst file to another computer, you must have either a mapped network connection to another computer, a floppy disk if the .pst file is smaller than 1.38 megabytes (MB), or another recordable media such as a CD-R . To copy the .pst file:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
  2. At the command prompt, type "cd \documents and settings\user\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook", and then press ENTER.
  3. If you are using a removable recordable media to transfer the .pst file to another computer, put the media in the appropriate media device.
  4. At the command prompt, type copy *.pst X:\, and then press ENTER, where X is the drive letter that is mapped to the other computer, your floppy disk drive, or the drive letter of another removable media device.
  5. If you are using a removable recordable media to copy the file, remove the media from the source computer and put it in the corresponding device of the destination computer.

Create a New .pst File

To create a new .pst file, open the .pst file that you copied to the second computer in Outlook and then export it as a new .pst file:
  1. On the second computer, start Outlook, click Open on the File menu, and then click Outlook Data File.
  2. In the Look in box, click the folder in which you saved the .pst file, and then click OK.
  3. On the View menu, click Folder List.
  4. Expand Personal Folders, click Inbox, and then check the mail to verify that this is the .pst file that you copied from the source computer. When you have identified the correct personal folder, note its position in the folder list.
  5. On the File menu, click Import and Export.
  6. In the Choose an action to perform box, click Export to a File, and then click Next.
  7. In the Create a file type box, click Personal Folder File (PST), and then click Next.
  8. In the Select the folder to export from box, click the personal folders that you noted in step 4.
  9. Click to select the Include subfolders check box, and then click Next.
  10. In the Save exported file as box, type C:\temp\outlook.pst, and then click Finish.
  11. Click OK.
