SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 5.0 and later, an imported EPS (encapsulated PostScript) graphic may be displayed as a box with some of the following words in it or other text describing other information regarding the graphic:
Title:
Creator:
CreationDate:

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when a PICT resource is not attached to the EPS file's resource fork. Word prints the graphic correctly, but does not display it on the screen.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Word, along with many other programs, does not actually process the EPS code, but displays a PICT graphic which is attached to the EPS file. When you print the document, Word processes the EPS code and sends it to the printer.

The PICT resource is number 256 in the resource fork of the EPS graphic. You can open this resource with ResEdit or similar utilities. Size limitations on PICT images may cause a discrepancy between the PICT graphic and the EPS graphic. Under these circumstances Word will size the PICT to match the EPS BoundingBox comment.
