SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Money to a shared folder on a network, you receive one of the following error messages:
  • Money must be installed on a local drive. Please enter a valid drive path.
Setup can not install Money onto the network. Please select a local hard drive for installation.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Money is not designed to be installed as a shared program on a network. Because of this, Money does not understand Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path names.

UNC path names use the following format:

\\computername\sharename

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, map a drive letter to the shared folder on the network, and then install Money to the mapped network drive.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft does not sell a site license for Money. You can install and run Money on a network. However, because Money is not designed to support multiple simultaneous users, only one person at a time can use the program.

Although Money includes options for printing to a network printer, running the program over a network is not supported.

CAUTION: Running Money from a network drive may cause loss of data if the network connection is interrupted. Running Money from a network is not supported by Microsoft.
