Works Err Msg: Not a Valid Text Stream (79513)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2.0
  • Microsoft Works 2.0a

This article was previously published under Q79513

SUMMARY

If you try to open a document in Microsoft Works for Windows that has the RTF extension but is not in the RTF format, the error message "Not a Valid Rich Text Stream" may appear in the Works for Windows Conversion dialog box. Microsoft Works will not be able to open the document until you rename it with an extension other than RTF.

MORE INFORMATION

After you choose the OK button or press ENTER when you receive the first error message, a second dialog box will appear:
Conversion not completed.
Choose OK or press ENTER and then rename the document. The document can be renamed from the Microsoft Windows File Manager, the command prompt, or by resaving the document from the original application.

This error message occurs because Microsoft Works assumes that any non-Works file with an RTF extension is in the RTF format and will try to convert it.
