SUMMARY

The Works for Windows error message "Reference not valid or wrong operand type" may be caused when using an OR (|) or an AND (&) operator in a database query if you do not include the name of the field in reference.

MORE INFORMATION

The OR and AND operators in Microsoft Works for Windows can be used to combine multiple criteria for selecting records in a query. If you have a field that contains alphanumeric data, include the name of the field in the query so you can use the OR or AND operators.

A sample for entering a query using an OR condition:

First Name:
Last Name:
State: =State="NC"|="WA"

If "=State=" is left out of this query, the error message "Reference not valid or wrong operand type" is generated.
