SYMPTOMS

If you have created a custom classification (the kind that adds a line to the register) and are issuing a split for your categories in Microsoft Money, the word "Split" appears in the Category field and in any Classification fields you have created.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because classification can be assigned within a category split screen. In this situation, you will not be able to view the entry in the Classification field, unless you refer to one of the two workarounds in this article.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

To view which class item and sub item you have chosen for a transaction that has been split into multiple categories, move into the Split Transaction window. To do this:
  1. Select the split transaction.
  2. On the Edit menu, click either the Split button or the Details button, depending on the type of split that you want to edit.

Method 2

Use the appropriate method for your version of Money.

Money 98 or Later

  1. On the navigation bar, click Reports to go to the Gallery of Reports and Charts.
  2. Click Spending Habits, and then click Account Transactions.
  3. Click Go To Report/Chart.
  4. Click Customize.
  5. Click to select the Show Splits check box.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click OK or click View (in Money 98).

Money 97

  1. Go to the Report and Chart Gallery.
  2. Click Spending Habits, and then click Account Transactions.
  3. Click Go to Report/Chart.
  4. Click Customize.
  5. Click to select the Show Splits check box.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click View.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior most likely occurs when, for example, you want to split the cost of your purchase into many categories, but you only want to assign a single classification to that transaction. The single classification will still display the word "Split" in its field.

Note As soon as a split is removed, all the transaction's split information will be deleted, including both categories and classes.
