SUMMARY

When viewing transactions in Microsoft Money by date, the sort order for the transactions is not only by date, but by check number as well.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Money sorts transactions by date when All (By Date) is selected from the View list. However, the sorting order is not based exclusively on the date alone. Money sorts first by the date and then by the check number field, as in the following example:
Check # Date NOW DISPLAYS Check# Date
   ------- ---- ------ ----

   5 1/1/91 5 1/1/91
   10 1/1/91 10 1/1/91
   15 1/1/91 15 1/1/91

If you change the check number on check 10 to 1, the order is now:
Check # Date NOW DISPLAYS Check# Date
   ------- ---- ------ ----

   5 1/1/91 1 1/1/91
   (10 to 1) 1/1/91 5 1/1/91
   15 1/1/91 15 1/1/91

The check number field is sorted in the following order based on whether the entry is a:
  1. Blank
  2. Symbol
  3. Number
  4. Letter
Because the order is by date, you may not expect a change in the order. However, as you can see, the order is changed. This is generally not an issue when you are sorting a few transactions; however, when more than a screen's worth of information is entered in Money, the change in the transaction order change could cause the transaction to disappear from the current field of view.
