SUMMARY

It is not possible to NET USE a shared communication device from either a Basic or an Enhanced DOS LAN Manager workstation. Attempting to do so will result in the following error:
NET817: Network Device Type Incorrect

-or-

DOS error 66 has occurred
The network device type is incorrect

MORE INFORMATION

Using shared communication devices from a DOS workstation is not supported in any version of Microsoft LAN Manager. It is not possible to offer redirection of communication devices under MS-DOS LAN Manager because almost all MS-DOS communication programs directly hook the hardware interrupt, bypassing any network services.

Redirection of communication devices is only supported for OS/2 workstations.
