The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q331867

SYMPTOMS

An Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server computer may stop responding when it schedules conferences.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the home public folder server is not available.

RESOLUTION

Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server uses the free and busy information from the public folder to schedule conferences. If the home public folder is not available, the Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server computer depends on the underlying Exchange infrastructure to provide a suitable public folder server. In some cases, this process may take an unusually long time. The Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server computer stops responding until the process is complete.

To resolve this issue, make sure that a public folder is installed with the Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server computer. The public folder must contain a replica of the free and busy information.

MORE INFORMATION

In a mixed Exchange 2000 and Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 environment, Exchange uses the following process to find the public store that is associated with the private store:
  1. Exchange checks the home public folder. If the home public folder is not available, Exchange goes to step 2.
  2. Exchange checks all the servers in the same administrative group for public folders, and then returns a random sever from this list. If no server in the administrative group or site is available, Exchange goes to step 3.
  3. Exchange chooses the next site based on cost, and then chooses a random public folder server in that site. The site cost is based on how the sites are connected. The site cost is the cost that is associated with site connectors.
