SUMMARY

This article describes the known graphic-related issues with Microsoft RalliSport Challenge.

MORE INFORMATION

When you start RalliSport Challenge, you may receive the following error message:
RalliSport Challenge requires a video card that supports hardware transform and lighting.
This issue may occur if RalliSport Challenge cannot correctly initialize Microsoft DirectDraw or Microsoft Direct3D to display the game. Microsoft DirectX may be corrupted. Alternatively, the video hardware acceleration may have to be increased. Finally, the video hardware may be unsupported.

Selecting supported display resolutions

When you try to configure your screen resolution, you may select a resolution setting that your monitor or video card does not support. If you select a resolution that is not supported, RalliSport Challenge defaults to a resolution that the hardware can actually display.

Desktop color depth and video card detection

If the desktop color depth is set to less than 16 bit color, the game may not detect the video card as a Hardware Transform & Lighting (T&L)-capable card. To resolve this issue, change the Windows desktop color depth to a setting that is greater than or equal to 16 bit.

Display resolution and older video cards

If the resolution of the game is set very high on older video cards, the RalliSport Challenge menu interface may become less responsive than normal. To work around this issue, configure the game resolution to a setting of 1024 x 768 dots per inch (dpi) or less.

Setting Monitor Refresh Rate

If the refresh rate setting is to Optimal in the Advanced settings under Windows Display Properties, graphical corruption may occur. To work around this issue, set the refresh rate to a fixed number within the range that is supported by your monitor.

Setting your refresh rate

When you try to configure your monitor refresh rate, you may select a refresh rate that is not supported by RalliSport Challenge. To resolve this issue, manually adjust your refresh rate settings. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.
  3. Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.
  4. Click the Monitor tab, and then click the lowest refresh rate available.
  5. Click OK, and then click OK again.

Note After you change your refresh rate, you may have to adjust your monitor settings so that your screen displays correctly. See your monitor documentation for more information.

Dynamic shadows are not available for video cards without pixel shader support

Video cards without pixel shader support do not support dynamic shadows in RalliSport Challenge. If you have a non-pixel shader card, the option to activate dynamic car shadows will not be available on the Advanced Display Settings menu. GeForce3, Radeon 8500, and later cards generally support pixel shaders. GeForce2, Radeon 7500, and earlier cards generally do not.

Specific 3-D graphics accelerator issues

Make sure that your computer has the latest drivers. Contact the manufacturer of your video adapter for information about how to obtain and install the latest version of the video driver for your video adapter. You may also visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site to see if applicable driver updates are available: To identify the name and manufacturer of your video adapter:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Display tab.
  4. Under Device, look for Name and Manufacturer.
  5. Click Exit.
There are a number of known issues for 3-D graphics accelerators. If a problem affects all or most cards of a particular chip set, only the name of the chip set is included in the following list.
