XL2002: Excel May Stop Responding When You Try to Edit a Long Formula That Contains a Link (331505)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to edit a long formula that contains a link, Microsoft Excel 2002 may stop responding.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The formula contains a link to an external workbook.
  • The source workbook is closed.
  • The length of the formula, which includes the path to the source workbook, exceeds 1024 characters.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Office XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
