You Cannot Connect to Exchange Instant Messaging or Your Communications Service with MSN Messenger 5.0 (330119)

This article was previously published under Q330119 SYMPTOMS You cannot use MSN Messenger 5.0 to connect and sign in to
Microsoft Exchange 2000 Instant Messaging or the Communications service. You
may experience this symptom after you install MSN Explorer version 8 on your
computer. CAUSE This behavior occurs because MSN Messenger 5.0 does not
support corporate instant messaging. MSN Messenger 5.0 is included with MSN
Explorer 8, and it is also available as a separate download. You cannot use MSN
Messenger 5.0 with Exchange Instant Messaging or the Communications service
because it does not provide connectivity to corporate Exchange 2000 Instant
Messaging or Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) servers. RESOLUTION If you require connectivity to Exchange 2000 Instant
Messaging or your Communication services account, use one of the following
methods: Windows XP Use Windows Messenger to connect to Exchange 2000 Instant
Messaging or the Communications service. In Windows XP, you can run both
Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger 5.0 at the same time if you are signed in
by using different accounts. For example, you can sign in to Windows Messenger
with your corporate instant messaging account, and then sign in to MSN
Messenger 5.0 with your Microsoft .NET Passport. Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 95 Remove MSN Explorer 8 and MSN Messenger 5.0 from your computer,
and then contact your network administrator for more information about how to
obtain and install the correct messenger client program for connectivity to
your corporate network. To remove MSN Explorer 8 and MSN Messenger 5.0 from
your computer:
- Click Start, and then click
Control Panel.
- Click Add or Remove Programs.
- Remove MSN Explorer 8:
- In the list of currently installed programs, click
MSN Internet Software, and then click
Change/Remove.
- Click Yes when you are prompted to
confirm the removal.
- Click OK.
- Remove MSN Messenger 5.0:
- In the list of currently installed programs, click
MSN Messenger 5.0, and then click
Remove.
- Click Yes when you are prompted to
confirm the removal.
- Quit the Add or Remove Programs tool.
