SYMPTOMS

When you install a post-Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) hotfix on a computer that is running Small Business Server 2000 or BackOffice Server 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Setup has detected that the build version of the system installed does not match the update you are applying to it.
You can only install this update on Exchange 2000 build 4417.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue:
  1. Run the hotfix installer (Qxxxxxx_eng_i386.exe) with the -x switch to extract the files.
  2. When you are prompted to do so, type the location to which you want to extract the files.
  3. Locate the file named Update.inf in the Update subfolder of the folder to which you extracted the files.
  4. Double-click Update.inf, and then locate the following line:

    MaxExchVersionToUpdate=4417

  5. Change the line to read:

    MaxExchVersionToUpdate=4629

  6. Save the change, and then run Update.exe from the Update subfolder.

MORE INFORMATION

The hotfix installer has been updated so that any hotfixes that are created after September 25, 2002 install properly on Small Business Server 2000 and BackOffice Server 2000.
