Audio and Video from TV Tuner Is Distorted When You Insert a CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM Drive (328974)

SYMPTOMS

If your computer uses a video adapter that has a TV tuner feature, when you insert a CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, you may experience the following problems:
  • The video stream that you receive from the TV tuner program is distorted.
  • The sound is either distorted or you do not receive any sound from the TV tuner program.
  • The TV tuner changes channels after you insert media or if you hot-plug a new device such as a universal serial bus (USB) device or a 1394 idevice into your computer.
This problem occurs after you apply the Windows Messenger Update for Audio/Video and Voice.Net that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

316397 Windows XP Real-Time Communication Client Support for Network Address Translation

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • Windows Messenger is running.

    -and-
  • You started Windows Messenger before you started the TV tuner program.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, start Windows Messenger after you start the TV tuner program.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
