This step-by-step article describes how to download and install Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) by using CD-ROMs.

SBS 2000 SP1 includes a collection of updates for security and support issues. You can order the service pack on a CD-ROM, or you can download the core service pack as a single file from the Microsoft Web site. For information about either option, visit the following Microsoft SBS Web site:

This article describes how to download SBS 2000 SP1 and related service packs and write them to compact disks. This process creates a two-CD set that is the same as an ordered set with the following exceptions:
  • The version of Service Pack 1 that you can order is a three-CD set.
  • There is no Microsoft Outlook 2002 included with the two-CD set you will create. The contents of the third CD is Outlook 2002.
  • There is no updated SBS 2000 Whitepapers folder.

Create CD-ROMs

To create the CD-ROMs:
  1. On the computer you are using to create the CD-ROMs, create a temporary folder.
  2. Create two new folders inside the temporary folder you created in step 1. Name these folders CD1 and CD2. You will extract the service pack files into these folders for later writing to the CDs.
  3. Download SBS 2000 SP1, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 SP1, and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) into the temporary folder that you created in step 1. To obtain these service packs, visit the following Microsoft Web sites: SBS 2000 SP1 (Sbssp1.exe):

    SQL Server 2000 SP3 (Sql2ksp3.exe):

  4. Extract the SBS 2000 SP1 files into the CD1 folder that you created in step 2:
    1. Double-click the Sbssp1.exe file.
    2. Click Browse, and then click the CD1 folder you created in step 2.
    3. Click Unzip.
    4. After the file extraction completes, click OK.
    5. Click Close.
  5. Move the Ex2ksp3_server.exe file in the CD1 folder to the temporary folder you created in step 1.
  6. Extract the Microsoft Exchange Server service pack files into the CD2 folder:
    1. Double-click the Ex2ksp3_server.exe file.
    2. Click Browse, and then click the CD2 folder you created in step 2.
    3. Click Unzip.
    4. After the file extraction completes, click OK.
    5. Click Close.
    6. The Exchange service pack extracts to a folder that is named "Server". Rename this folder to Exchsrvr60_sp3.
  7. Extract the ISA Server 2000 service pack:
    1. Create a folder that is named ISA30_SP1 inside the CD2 folder.
    2. At a command prompt, change to the drive and folder in which the Isasp1.exe file is located.
    3. Type isasp1 /x, and then press ENTER.
    4. When you receive the "Choose Directory For Extracted Files" message, click Browse. Click the ISA30_SP1 folder you made in step A. Click OK to accept the path, and then click OK to start the extraction.
    5. After the file extraction completes, click OK.
  8. If you chose to include them, extract the SQL service pack files:
    1. Create a folder that is named SQL2000_SP3 in the CD2 folder.
    2. Double-click the Sql2ksp3.exe file.
    3. Click Browse.
    4. Open the CD2\SQL2000_SP3 folder.
    5. Click OK, and then click Finish.
    6. After you receive a "The package has been delivered successfully" message, click OK.
  9. Use a CD writing program to create the CDs:
    1. Put the contents of the CD1 folder on the first CD, and label this CD SBS2KSP1. The only files and folders that are included on this CD are "Readme.htm, Sp1setup.exe, Update.exe and Updatesbs.msi".
    2. Put the contents of the CD2 folder on the second CD, and label this CD SRVPACKS2. The only files and folders that are included on this CD are "ISA30_SP1, Exchsrvr60_sp3 and SQL2000_SP3".

Install SBS 2000 Service Pack 1 from the CD-ROMs

  1. Install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4):
    1. Insert the first CD-ROM of the SBS service pack into the CD-ROM drive.
    2. Run the Sp1setup.exe file on this CD.
    3. If Windows 2000 SP4 is not yet installed, you receive a message that it must be installed. Click OK.
    4. When the Windows 2000 SP4 Setup Wizard starts, click Next.
    5. Click I Agree, and then click Next.
    6. Create "Archive Files", and then click Next.
    7. On the "Completing the Windows 2000 SP4 Setup Wizard" page, click Next to restart the server.
  2. Install Exchange 2000 SP3:
    1. When the server restarts from the Windows 2000 service pack installation, Setup continues. If Exchange 2000 SP3 is not yet installed, you receive a message that it must be installed. Click OK.
    2. When you receive a message that Setup needs the CD with the Exchange 2000 service pack, insert the "SVRPACKS2" CD, and then click OK.
    3. When the Exchange 2000 service pack installation starts, click Next.
    4. The "Summary" pages lists the operations that will be performed. Click Next.
    5. Click Finish.
    6. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.
  3. Install SBS 2000 SP1:
    1. When the server restarts from the Exchange 2000 service pack installation, Setup continues.
    2. Click I Agree, and then click Next.
    3. Click Finish.
    4. You are prompted to restart your computer. If you plan to install ISA Server or SQL service packs, click No. If you do not plan to install additional service packs, click Yes to restart your computer.
  4. Install ISA Server SP1:
    1. Open the ISA Server SP1 folder.
    2. Run the Hotfix.exe file.
    3. Click I Agree, and then click Next.
    4. Click OK to restart the server.
  5. Install SQL SP3:
    1. Open the "SQL2000_SP3" folder on the SRVPACKS2 CD.
    2. Double-click the Setup.bat file.
    3. When Setup starts, click Next.
    4. On the "Software License Agreement" page, click Yes.
    5. On the "Instance Name" page, click Next.
    6. On the "Connect to Server" page, accept the default settings, and then click Next.
    7. On the "Start Copying Files" page, click Next.
    8. On the "Microsoft Data Access Components 2.71a Setup" page, click Next.
    9. On the "Installing the Software" page, click Finish.
    10. When you receive the "You should now backup your master and msdb databases since this installation has updated their content" message, click OK.
    11. Click Yes, I want to restart my computer now, and then click Finish to restart the server.

Troubleshooting

  • If you try to put the Exchange 2000 service pack files on the first CD, you may receive the following error message:
    Service Pack 1 (SP1) Setup requires 5 MB of disk space on the drive containing the Program Files directory. Delete unnecessary files to free up disk space, and then run SP1 Setup again.
  • If you do not label the second CD as SRVPACKS2, you are continuously prompted to insert the CD when you try to install the Exchange 2000 service pack, and Setup does not work.
