XADM: Information Store Service Does Not Start After You Cancel or Remove an Installation of WinFax PRO (328333)

SYMPTOMS

After you cancel or remove an installation of the Symantec "WinFax PRO" program from your Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • The Exchange Information Store service and the Exchange MTA Stacks service do not start.
  • You may receive one or more of the following error messages:
    store.exe - Unable To Locate DLL: The dynamic link library MDBROLE.DLL could not be found in the specified path.
    emsmta.exe - Unable To Locate DLL: The dynamic link library MTAAQSVR.dll could not be found in the specified path.
  • You may receive one or more of the following entries in the Event Viewer Application log:

    Event ID: 1197
    Description: The description for Event ID ( 1197 ) in Source ( MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (Exchange 2000 Server computer name).

    Event ID: 1197
    Description: The description for Event ID ( 1197 ) in Source ( MSExchangeIS Public Store ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (Exchange 2000 Server computer name).

    Event ID: 9519
    Description: The description for Event ID ( 9519 ) in Source ( MSExchangeIS ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 0x451, First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (Exchange 2000 Server computer name).
  • If you try to resolve this issue by reinstalling Exchange 2000 Server, Setup may stop responding (hang). This occurs at the "Configuring registry entries for SMTP service" stage of Setup. After you quit Setup, you may receive entries in the Exchange Server Setup Progress.log file. The last four lines in this file may be similar to the following lines:
    [time] Leaving CBaseAtom(SMTP Service)::ScRefreshRegistryKeys
    [time] Entering CAtomSMTP::ScWriteRegistryKeys
    [time] Setting ACL for Mailroot subtree
    [time] Creating Mailroot directory at drive:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot

CAUSE

To resolve this issue, rename the Mailroot folders, and then reinstall Exchange 2000 Server:
  1. Use Windows Explorer to locate the drive:\Inetpub\Mailroot folder.
  2. Rename this Mailroot folder to Oldmailroot.
  3. Use Windows Explorer to locate the drive:\Exchsrvr\Mailroot folder.
  4. Rename this Mailroot folder to Oldmailroot.
  5. Reinstall Exchange 2000 Server.
  6. Install the most recent Exchange 2000 Server service pack.
