Error Message When You Reinstall Operating System Updates with SBS 2000 SP1 (327704)

SYMPTOMS

When you reinstall Small Business Server (SBS) 2000, the Component Messages page displays an error message for the Operating System Updates. If you click Operating System Updates in the components tree, the details pane displays the following error message:
The application failed to install properly.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if a computer on the network is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 Setup from the server's ClientApps5 share while you are trying to reinstall SBS components.

RESOLUTION

Verify that no computers on the network are installing software or updates from the ClientApps5 share before you try to reinstall Small Business Server 2000.

By default, the ClientApps5 share is located in the ClntApps folder on the root of the system drive (usually drive C).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
