PRB: ISA Cache Only Mode and the All Internal Destinations Destination Set (327320)

SYMPTOMS

When you use ISA Server in Cache only mode, you may see unexpected behavior when the destination set is set to All internal destinations or All external destinations.

CAUSE

ISA uses the Local Address Table (LAT) and Local Domain Table (LDT) to determine which addresses are internal and which are external. When you install ISA in Cache only mode, no LAT or LDT exists, and all addresses are treated as internal.

MORE INFORMATION

Because all addresses are treated as internal when ISA is installed in Cache only mode, all addresses meet the criteria of the All Internal Destinations destination set, and the All External Destinations destination set is never used. This may have unforeseen effects on routing rules and site and content rules.

For example, if you use the All Internal Destinations destination set in a routing rule, all destinations meet the criterica for this routing rule, and no lower priority rules come into effect. If this destination set is used in a routing rule, it should have a lower priority than any more restrictive routing rules.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
